Lord Vere è abituato a tendere trappole.
Chapter 1
The Marquess of Vere was a man of few words.

This fact, however, would astonish all but a select few of his numerous friends and acquaintances. The general consensus was that Lord Vere talked. And talked. And talked. There was no subject under the sun, however remote or abstruse, upon which he did not eagerly venture an opinion or ten. Indeed, there were times when one could not stop him from pontificating on that newly discovered class of chemical substance known as the Pre-Raphaelites, or the curious culinary habits of the Pygmy tribes of central Sweden.

Lord Vere was also man who held his secrets close.

But anyone so deluded as to voice such a pronouncement would find himself surrounded by ladies and gentlemen on the floor, screaming in laughter. For Lord Vere, according to public opinion, could not distinguish a secret from a hedgehog. Not only was he garrulous, he volunteered the most intimate, most inappropriate personal knowledge at the drop of a hat—or even without a stitch of haberdashery anywhere in sight.

He gladly related his difficulties with the courting of young ladies: he was rejected early and rejected often, despite his stature as a peer of the realm. He gave up without hesitation the state of his finances—though it had been discovered that he was quite without a notion as to how much funds were at his disposal, current and future. He even ventured—not in mixed company, of course—to comment on the size and girth of his masculine endowment: enviable on both counts, the measurements verified by the experiences of the merry widows who looked to him for an occasional tumble in the sheets.

Lord Vere was, in other words, an idiot. Not a raving one, for his sanity was rarely questioned. And not so moronic that he could not see to his daily needs. Rather, he was an amusing idiot, as ignorant and puffed up as a pillow, silly to the extreme, but sweet, harmless, and very well liked among the Upper Ten Thousand for the diversion he provided—and for his inability to remember anything told him that did not affect his meals, his nightly beauty rest, or the pride and joy that resided in his underlinens.

He could not shoot straight; his bullets never met a grouse except by accident. He rarely failed to turn knobs and levers in the wrong direction. And as his gift for wandering into the wrong place at the wrong time was legendary, hardly anyone batted an eyelash to learn that he was an eyewitness to a crime—without having any idea what he’d seen, most assuredly.

Such an extraordinary idiot had he been in the thirteen years since his unfortunate riding accident that no one not privy to his more clandestine activities had ever remarked on his proximity to some of the most sensational criminal cases of the upper crust, shortly before those cases were solved and the culprits brought to justice.

It was an interesting life, to say the least. Sometimes the tiny handful of other agents of the Crown who knew his true role wondered how he felt about playing the idiot for most of his waking hours. They never found out, for he was a man of few words and held his secrets close.

Of course, no secret remains a secret forever…the beginning of the end of Lord Vere’s secret came, quite literally, in an ambush by a young woman of questionable ancestry and equally questionable methods.

A young woman who, in a strange twist of fate, would soon become the Marchioness of Vere, his lady wife. ...

In previsione di questa presentazione in occasione dell'uscita del suo nuovo romanzo, ho fatto a Sherry qualche domanda su HIS AT NIGHT.
Ecco cosa mi ha risposto:

LMBR: Cosa ti ha dato l'ispirazione per HIS AT NIGHT ( Sua di notte)? What gave you inspiration for HIS AT NIGHT ?

E avevo ragione.
After NOT QUITE A HUSBAND, I needed to hand in a proposal for my next book. My first proposal was rejected. So I cast around rather desperately for ideas. Since I have turned to Meredith Duran for inspiration before--one crucial scene in NOT QUITE A HUSBAND was my take on the famous Globe Scene from THE DUKE OF SHADOWS (the book is available in Italy as Cuori nell’ombra)--I begged her to let me have early access to WRITTEN ON YOUR SKIN, convinced that was where my muse lay.
I was absolutely right. The beginning chapters of WRITTEN ON YOUR SKIN, about a man who is not as nice and innocuous as he seems and a girl who is not as dumb as she appears, blew me away. I decided right then and there that I would reverse the genders of the characters, i.e., have a man who is not as dumb as he appears and a girl not as sweet as she looks, and go from there.

The plot, with the hero who's a secret agent, gives me the impression that what we're going to read is something different from your previous books. Is that so? Should we expect a bit more action this time?
This book definitely has more of an external plot than my other books: There is an active investigation going on into the alleged misdeeds of the heroine's uncle. Probably the bigger difference from my prior books is that there are no reunited lovers here. This time the hero and the heroine have never met before, so that's something new for me.
Something of the story, probably the fact that Vere is hiding behind the persona of one of Society’s most harmless—and idiotic—bachelors, reminds me of the Scarlet Pinpernel . Is it just a coincidence or did you think of Baroness Orczy's famous book when choosing Vere's cover?

Vere di HIS AT NIGHT è esattamente l'opposto: represso, riservato, e...dannato. I was actually thinking more of MR. IMPOSSIBLE by Loretta Chase, which I'd thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. Impossible has a hero who is mistakenly thought by the heroine to be a dumb lummox at the beginning of the book. His at Night has a hero who is mistakenly thought by the heroine to be a dumb lummox at the beginning of the book, ergo I must be writing Mr. Impossible.
As it turns out, I might have written the anti-Mr. Impossible. Rupert, the titular Mr. Impossible, is about the most irrepressible, sunny, forthright fellow you can hope to meet in Romancedom. Vere from His at Night is just the opposite, repressed, secretive, and, gulp, damaged. I've never done a damaged hero before--wounded, yes, but not damaged. But Vere, Vere is messed up.
LMBR: Questo nuovo romanzo è in qualche modo collegato ai tuoi libri precedenti? Does this new book have any links with your previous ones?

Yes, this is quasi-sequel to PRIVATE ARRANGEMENTS, as Vere is the elder brother of Freddie, an important secondary character from PA. And Freddie gets his own love story in this one.

The book blurb doesn't say much about the heroine,Elissande Edgerton, apart the fact that she has to get married to get out of an unbearable situation at home. Could you anticipate something about her personality?
Elissande's personality is interesting in that when readers first meet her, they'd probably assume her to be as damaged as Vere. But that is not true. She is determined and she does make some brow-raising choices in this book, in order to get herself and her aunt away from her abusive uncle. But she possesses a tremendous joie de vivre and loves life and everything beautiful about it, and it is this incandescence to which Vere is drawn against his will.

E in HIS AT NIGHT ? The books of yours which I prefer deal with love stories in which the protagonists have a typical love/hate relationship. What about HIS AT NIGHT?

Oh, yes, definitely a love/hate relationship here, combined with a lot of mutual misconception of the part of the hero and the heroine, as she believes him to be a drooling idiot, and he sees her as a terrible opportunist. I hope you will enjoy their journey to discover the truth about each other. And thank you for having me on your blog! It is, as always, a pleasure and a privilege to be here.

Sherry
