Cosa provi all'idea che i tuoi romanzi vengano mutilati?
inviato i tagli affinchè li approvassi.

EH : Abitualmente lavoro ogni giorno.

EH : Thank you, Francy!

THE ORIGINAL INTERVIEW

Our blog welcomes Elizabeth Hoyt !

Elizabeth, it was really kind of you to accept to answer our questions on the occasion of the coming out of the Italian translation of The Raven Prince- Il principe e la preda-, that is also your first book to be translated into Italian. As a big fan of yours, I'm more than glad that this great book is finally available to the Italian romance readers. They'll be delighted as I was the first time I had read it! And the good news is that it is going to be followed soon by the other two books in the Prince trilogy.

What a treat for the Italian fans of the genre! I don't know if I'm one of the first Italian readers who found out about you and your books, but I'm sure one of your biggest fans and I'm very glad and honored to guest you on my blog. My friend Vivienne, co-blogger, who loves The Raven Prince as much as I do, has helped me think about the following questions that we hope are similar to the questions that the readers of this blog and Italian romance fans in general would ask you after reading 'Il Principe e la Preda' (The Raven Prince).

LMBR: Were you a romance reader before being a romance author? When and why did you decide to start writing books? Was The Raven Prince immediately
accepted for publication ?
EH : Oh, yes, I was--and still am--an avid romance reader! I read tons of Regencies and Harlequin Presents books when I was a teenager, then got into the longer historicals and contemporary romances. Now I read paranormal romances, romantic suspense, contemporary romance, and historical romance when I'm not writing them.
I didn't start writing until I was thirty-five. That was when my youngest child entered full-day school and I had some time to myself. I figured that since I'd been an at-home mom and hadn't yet started a career this would be a good time in my life to see if I could write a book. I gave myself five years to write and publish a book--and in fact THE RAVEN PRINCE sold shortly after my fortieth birthday! It took about a year and a half for THE RAVEN PRINCE to sell. This was back when historical romances were supposed to be dead and the publishers just weren?t buying many. THE RAVEN PRINCE was rejected by five major houses before it found a home at Warner Books.

LMBR:How did you conceive the Prince trilogy? Did you have all the stories in your head before writing the first book or did everything start with The Raven Prince?
EH : I had the heroes of each book (Edward de Raaf from THE RAVEN PRINCE, Harry Pye from THE LEOPARD PRINCE, and Simon Iddesleigh from THE SERPENT PRINCE) and a vague idea of what their problem would be, but other than that, no, I didn?t have them all plotted out.

LMBR: How came that you chose such unusual characters for your first book? I mean, the choice of main characters was rather hazardous -- Edward de Raaf isn't at all like the typical dazzling rakehells we are used to reading about in many historical novels. He is rather grumpy and isn't classically handsome -- some might even think of him as ugly, with his face marked by smallpox. And Anne Wren, the heroine, is far from the ordinary virtous debutante herself ? She's a determined mature widow in her thirties.
EH : I wrote the kind of book that I myself wanted to read. I wanted a strong, interesting hero who was still a guy. And I definitely wanted a heroine that I could identify with. The typical teenage historical heroine is just too young and unformed to be of much interest--and how can she stand up to a strong hero in his thirties? I feel that strong heroines are very important to my books.

LMBR: Did you choose to have mature characters in this book because you wanted it to be full of passion and dealing with a heroine who was not a virgin would give you more freedom of expression? To what extent is now explicit sensuality important for the success of a romance book?
EH : In a word, yes. ;-) I wanted a heroine who wasn't a virgin. Now I have written virgin heroines (Georgina in THE LEOPARD PRINCE is unmarried.) But having an experienced heroine gives more freedom. Also, if Anna hadn't been married by the age of thirty in this time period, I would have to explain it. After all, she couldn't be a career woman. I think the highly sensual nature of my books has helped with their success. At the same time I'm uneasy saying that ALL books should be sexy. Some authors are comfortable writing sexy books, some aren't, and many readers don't like sexy books, so there is room for everyone's tastes.

LMBR: Despite the unusual characters -- or because of them -- The Raven Prince didn't struggle much to become a great success among romance readers. What's in this novel to make readers love it so much?
EH : LOL! I'm not exactly sure! THE RAVEN PRINCE is still selling very well in the USA, two years after it debuted. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was because of the strong characters, the high sensuality, and--in all modesty--my voice, which is somewhat wry.

LMBR: Who could play Edward De Raaf in a movie? (Vivienne would suggest a younger Alan Rickman.)
EH : Oh, I like the idea of Alan Rickman! It would have to be an actor with a somewhat brooding air, wouldn't it?

LMBR: Italian translations of romance books often miss some parts of theoriginals because 'cuts' are often necessary to fit the number of pages (usually fewer) of the Italian editions. But sometimes cuts are also made to make the overall sensuality level of the book a bit milder as Italian romance readers are thought to like their stories to be more romantic than sensual. How do you feel about your novels being cut ? Do you think that a book like the Raven Prince, whose hot scenes are often essential turning points for the development of the plot, could be somehow deprived by such cuts?
EH : Actually, I was surprised because my Italian publisher sent me the cuts to approve. THE RAVEN PRINCE has been translated in four other languages to date and no other publisher asked me my opinion. The cuts were quite extensive, but I noticed they DIDN?T include the love scenes. As a writer, I would of course rather that my work not be cut, but I can understand that it would be too expensive to publish the book otherwise.

LMBR:What's your working routine? Are you a methodical writer who follows a precise writing plan, with a fixed plot , or do you give more room to your inspiration, so that the development of a plot or the destiny of a character can be suddenly changed? How long does it take you to write a new story? Where do you find inspiration for new stories? How long do you research before starting writing a new book?
EH : I usually work every day. I go into a coffee shop to write because my husband works out of our house and I find it less distracting in a coffee shop. I do extensive character studies and outlines on a book before I start writing, but even so the work is quite liquid as I write. I just started a book in which a new character appeared out of the blue on page one! Some things simply can't be anticipated. Usually it takes me three to four months to write a book. I'm afraid I don't know where inspiration comes from, it just does. ;-) And the research is pretty much continuous. I usually have an idea for a book a year or more in advance. While I'm writing a book I may be reading research for the book I'll write two books on.

LMBR:Which main feautures should your heroes and heroines always have?
EH : I think my heroines always have strength of mind and my heroes are just strong, period. ;-)

LMBR:Your new series of the Legend of the four soldiers is set in the same period as the Prince trilogy --- the Georgian Era . Are you just fond of the period or are there any other reasons for this choice of time setting? In what is the new series different from the Prince series?
EH : I do like the Georgian period quite a bit. There was so much going on with new inventions, new ways of thinking, and the world itself was changing. I also like the contrast between the upper class and their incredibly expensive and elegant clothing and furniture and the lower classes who were working the land, dealing with gin addiction, and treated so badly in some places. The Legend of the Four Soldiers is a much more closely linked series. I don't think it matters which book is read in the Prince trilogy, but the Soldiers should probably be read in order. There's an over-arcing mystery in the Legend of the Four Soldiers and I'm also dealing with similar themes in the books. All the heroes are veterans of the French and Indian War in the American Colonies (part of the Seven Years War) and they all have to deal with issues resulting from the war.

LMBR:The second book in your series of the Four Soldiers , To Seduce a Sinner , is on bookshelves now. What is going to seduce your readers in this new book? And more broadly speaking, what features do you think a romance book should have to be definitely seductive?
EH : I'm very happy with TO SEDUCE A SINNER as a writer. It's an intimate book about a man and woman who are married as strangers but who come to know--and love--each other. I think readers will like it because it's a very passionate book. Melisande, the heroine, has been in love with Vale, the hero, for years, but he doesn't even know her name. Melisande must use her passionate nature to seduce her own husband. And I think passion--emotional as well as physical--is the most important ingredient in a romance. I don't want to read about half-hearted emotions. I want to read about love that is so consuming the hero or heroine is willing to die for it.

LMBR: You are going to publish a free serial novella, The Ice Princess, on your blog starting in January. Why did you decide to do it?
EH : I got a lot of email from readers about a character from THE RAVEN PRINCE, Coral Smythe, and I eventually realized that the only way her story would get written was if I offered it on my website. I'll be posting a chapter a month in 2009 of THE ICE PRINCESS and I hope readers enjoy it!

LMBR: You also write contemporary romance under the pen name Julia Harper. Is it difficult for you to switch from the Georgian era to the present time? What of Elizabeth Hoyt can we find in Julia Harper?
EH : Actually, it's not hard at all for me. My Julia Harper books take place in the Midwest, which is where I've lived all my life, so it's very comfortable for me. The Julia Harper books are faster and lighter than my Elizabeth Hoyt books, but they do share a high sensuality level and quick dialogue.

LMBR: Do you regularly check your readers' reviews on the internet booksellers' sites? And what about bloggers' reviews?
EH : I don't usually read reviews--they're for readers, after all, not the writer, but sometimes my agent will forward me one that's particularly nice.

LMBR: We Italian romance fans are always delighetd when we can read about Italian characters in romance books. Can we hope to read about Italian characters in one of you future novels ?
EH : What a good idea! I'll definitely have to think about it. ;-)

LMBR: Thank you so much Elizabeth for being our guest at la mia biblioteca romantica I'm sure Italian readers will be eager to hear more from you once they've read The Raven Prince and the following books in the trilogy (but I also hope that your new series will be soon translated as well) so we hope you will be glad to be our guest again in the future.

EH :
Thank you, Francy!

  1. Bella intervista!
